A look at CALMAC's leadership

March 29, 2016

CALMAC is best known for its leadership in the thermal energy storage industry - a feat made possible by an outstanding global network of industry partners and a dedicated local team that believes in creating a quality energy storage product that performs as energy efficiently as possible for each and every CALMAC customer. But you don't have to take our word on it, CALMAC's average employee length of service is 19 years as a result of our conviction and tenacity.

CALMAC Leadership
Directing the CALMAC team are a number of people who steer the reins - each of them producing a visible impact on the success this company has earned. First and foremost, is Calvin D. MacCracken.

Cal MacCracken: The founder of CALMAC was recently inducted into the ASHRAE Hall of Fame for his contributions as an engineer and long time member. Mr. MacCracken invented over 250 products in his lifetime, with many still being used today, such as CALMAC's IceBank Energy Storage Tank, IceMat ice rink floors and the common Roll-A-Grill hot dog cookers that line the streets in many of the nation's cities.

The CALMAC story
In March of 1947, Calvin "Cal" MacCracken, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of technology, launched an engineering firm named Jet Heet Inc. After successfully completing research and development for a number of high-profile candidates like Whirlpool over the years, Cal moved the company to New Jersey in 1949 and renamed it CALMAC in 1964.

During the 1970's, Cal's son Mark joined the company, where the new focus shifted to renewable and clean energy, like solar and thermal. After a devastating fire during 1980 that burned CALMAC's headquarters to the ground, the company resumed working in a new building. It was at this time that Mark and Cal realized this could be a defining moment for the company, and they shifted all of their focus on standardizing thermal energy storage to work in tandem with conventional air conditioning.

Mark has three patents and has received a number of awards for his work in the industry, such as the AEE (Association of Energy Engineers) Energy Engineer of the Year award and the status of Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE (American Society of heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

Brian Silvetti: The current vice president of engineering at CALMAC carries 30 years of experience in every step of the thermal energy storage operation. He has served as chairman of ASHRAE's committee on turbine inlet air cooling and TC 6.9, and has a number of published articles to go along with his master's degree in mechanical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Paul Valenta: The man most often seen at conferences educating consumers about the powerful benefits of thermal energy storage is the vice president of sales and marketing at CALMAC. Valenta has been in the HVAC industry for 32 years, with 21 of them at CALMAC. He has a large body of published work and regularly lectures on the commercial benefits of thermal energy storage.

With the CALMAC leadership and the best well trained and dedicated employees in the business, CALMAC has become an industry giant, completing 4,000 installations in 60 countries that total over 500 megawatts of fast acting controllable thermal energy storage capacity.
