Trane upgrades Earthwise Ice-Enhanced Air-Cooled Chiller Cooling Plant with low-noise chiller

September 19, 2014

The primary appeal of Trane's Earthwise Ice-Enhanced Air Cooled Chiller Plant is energy efficiency, as the cooling solution offers 20 to 30 percent savings over competitive systems. Trane recently announced that the Earthwise system is now compatible with the company's Stealth air-cooled chiller, so educational and commercial campuses can benefit from energy-efficient cooling with ultra-quiet performance.

Stealth meets efficiency
Trane's Stealth air-cooled chiller offers industry-leading efficiency (up to 12.1 EER at full-load operation) combined with cutting-edge technology solutions that allow the chiller to operate with minimal sound pollution. In fact, Contracting Business reports that Trane's Stealth chillers run at the quietest published sound levels in the entire industry. This added functionality makes Trane's Earthwise Ice-Enhanced Air-Cooled Chiller Plant an even better fit for universities and large research facilities where excess sound pollution could create distractions. Construction of the system at schools is no longer limited by proximity to residential neighborhoods thanks to Trane's noise-reducing technology.

The key to the Stealth air-cooler's performance is a newly designed specific-speed screw compressor. The new component is 10 percent more efficient than its predecessor, operates at low sound levels and is supported by an industrial bearing system that boosts the compressor's reliability. This new technology allows Trane's Stealth air-cooler to reduce noise pollution while retaining the durability and efficient performance that are hallmarks of the Trane brand.

The CALMAC edge
Campuses and commercial buildings in need of efficient, cost-effective cooling are now able to rely on the performance of Trane's cooling solutions at the lowest noise levels available. The cost-savings of the Earthwise Ice-Enhanced Air Cooled Chiller Plant is in part due to the utilization of CALMAC's IceBank thermal energy storage tanks. These non-corrosive, insulated tanks require near-zero maintenance and are completely compatible with the Earthwise system thanks to a lasting partnership between CALMAC and Trane.

The integration of these industry-leading technologies provides companies with a "one-source solution provider for equipment, control and services," said Susanna Hanson, Trane's principal applications engineer. CALMAC's IceBank thermal energy storage tanks are integral to the Earthwise Cooling Plant's system design. The use of CALMAC's IceBank storage tanks also provides opportunities for campuses seeking certification from the U.S. Green Building Council to earn LEED points.
