Newsletter April 2014
Hello everyone. Here’s what’s new.
We are already well into 2014, but you will enjoy viewing all the CALMAC® energy storage news from 2013 in this cool Flipboard magazine! Also, read this AHR Expo recap from The ACHR NEWS magazine in which CALMAC’s CEO speaks on incentive programs and likens thermal energy storage to making ice cubes for a party. A CALMAC case study on the LEED Gold California State Lottery was featured in Engineered Systems and shows how IceBank® energy storage and solar panels are a sure bet. Plus, ASHRAE Journal's email feature of the week was Energy Storage: Providing for a Low-Carbon Future by CALMAC CEO Mark MacCracken, P.E., Member ASHRAE. Download here free for limited time only!
Next in CALMAC news, Terry Andrews, CALMAC’s Western regional expert on thermal energy storage met with building professionals at the Green Schools National Network show. Evan Berger, Director of Energy Solutions at CALMAC presented at NY Best in a panel discussion with Ice Energy and NYSERDA on policy and technology developments. And Paul Valenta, CALMAC VP of Sales and Marketing spoke at a company-wide Trane webinar as well as at the Thermal Energy Storage Workshop in Texas.
In more news, two semi-trucks full of the newest Trane® equipment and services, including the EarthWise™ Ice Enhanced Chiller Plant will making 70 stops throughout North America for Trane’s Acceleration Now Tour. The first stop was in Miami where Mark Johnson, CALMAC Southeast regional manager presented on energy storage leadership. Also, during the event, Trane awarded the St Lucie school district an energy efficiency award. St Lucie school district partnered with Florida Power & Light (FPL) on energy upgrades such as thermal energy storage to reduce the need for FPL to upgrade their systems or build new power plants. The school district reduced annual utility costs from more than $12 million to less than $7 million with the help of a chiller plant upgrade with CALMAC® IceBank® energy storage tanks.
Last but not least, "People are turning to storage as a solution," confirms Haresh Kamath, program manager for energy storage at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Incentives for energy storage are spreading worldwide. In New York, for example, the utility Con Edison proposed a new energy storage incentive program for battery and thermal storage that would provide an additional $2,000 per kW of stored energy on top of the $600 per kW currently offered by NYSERDA.
